Lynn, we met at a party last year. Do you recall who was enjoying your twins that night? Do you have an arsenal of sitters or do you have a main squeeze in that department?

We absolutely have a favorite babysitter who has enjoyed our kids fairly regularly over the past few years. I believe she was the babysitter who was with them the night that I met you. I would say that I have three ”˜go-to’ babysitters at any given time and five or six other sitters who have babysat for my kids just a couple of times. The great part is that I found a lot of of these sitters on UrbanSitter and I booked them because they are friends with other sitters I’ve liked. So it is an arsenal of sitters, but a lot of of them know each other.

What’s the best recommendations you’ve received about hiring or managing a babysitter?

Spend time enjoying the sitter interacting with your children before you leave.

Make sure your instructions are clearly explained or written out, including when, under what certain scenarios you would like the sitter to phone or contact you. For example, do you want her to call if your child won’t eat his broccoli, if he won’t sleep, or only if there is an emergency.

I’m delighted with the growth to date and ecstatic that the network of parents and sitters continues to grow. It’s amazing how small the world is and how lots of connections are made daily.

How did you get the idea to create UrbanSitter?

As busy parents, we saw a need – we were finding it time consuming and tough to find a trusted sitter that was actually available when we needed the help. We needed a way to simplify and personalize the process, so parents could go online to find babysitters recommended by friends.

You told me that parents and sitters both get uneasy when the moment of payment comes. What did they tell you about that?

Parents and sitters report feeling awkward at the time of payment because parents often forget the agreed upon rate, and then it is uneasy for the sitters when parents are counting out cash. Sitters want to know they are getting the agreed upon rate, but don’t want to count the money in front of the parents. We introduced a “pay online” option that helps parents and sitters avoid this awkwardness.

This one is for the rookies. What did you learn in your first year as a mommy that shocked you?

I have twins so my greatest lesson learned the first year relates to having two babies. I remember following recommendations from books or doctors with both babies. One would react exactly like the book or doctor told me he would. The other would react completely differently. It made me a a lot more kicked back parent because I learned that often as a parent you do everything you can to create the best situation for your child and they may not react how you expect.

Jessica is a rookie mommy deep in the middle of her first year in Alabama. Her sidekick is six-month old Holden (great name!). She chronicles their adventures at her blog, mother of a Homegrown Kid.

As a new mommy getting the baby out of the house isn’t the scary part. I love packing him up and driving around. It’s the out in public part that worries me. I never know when he might have a meltdown or an explosive diaper. We’ve been taking him out to eat with us considering that he was two weeks old without any problems but unexpectedly at five months he became a different baby in public.

Instead of quietly observing the world around him, he wants to be a part of it. He wants to play and show strangers that he can sit up (mostly) on his own. He wants people to smile at him and he wants to interact with the world around him. His daddy isn’t anxious about these things at all. His daddy faces things head-on and so I am following his lead, putting on a brave face, and going on adventures.

We have been on several this summer including a trip to the zoo and a day at the lake. I think I took pleasure in the zoo a lot more than Holden or his daddy did but he did pay attention to the always entertaining monkeys and several large birds. I particularly took pleasure in a mother and daughter pair of elephants and the family of giraffes.

It was really neat to enjoy how animal mothers interact with their offspring. I’ve never paid much attention before but I found myself getting teary-eyed comparing animal mother and baby pairs.

Holden fell asleep about halfway through the zoo but we continued on in the heat and really took pleasure in the day. wearing him around added to the heat but I think he liked being higher up than he would have been in a stroller. He was also comfortable in a new environment having me so close.

Lake Swim
Our most current venture was to the lake for a swim. Holden’s first ever swim to be exact. I was a little nervous but mostly ecstatic about swimming and spending a family day at the lake. We gotten a float that wasn’t nearly as cool as it looked on the box but served it’s purpose for the day. I covered the baby in sunblock and passed him over to his daddy to introduce him to the water.

To our surprise he immediately smiled, laughed, and kicked his little legs! We had so much fun floating him around and later playing in the shallow water. He splashed and laughed a lot of of the day. It was great and I’m happy we went. We’ll absolutely be swimming a lot a lot more this summer.

I’m looking forward to the rest of our summer and hoping that we find lots of a lot more adventures that we’re brave enough to try!

When I found out I was pregnant for the first time, I was in the middle of Swakopmund Namibia. I had just peed on a stick in a hostel-environment and was holding hands with my newlywed husband (after the peeing!). I was a bajillion miles from the friends and family who could comfort me and all I could think about was two things:

Must call Whitney — she’ll know what to do. She’s about to have her first baby and she knows what this is about.

Must buy What to expect — it’s the only book I’d heard of to that point and surely it will tell me what’s about to happen.

A few days later, I did manage to call Whitney. She was finishing up work before maternity leave and, surprisingly, did not have much advice for her crazy friend traveling the world without a home, job, or insurance coverage. but she shared our exciting secret, and that was enough.

As for that book…I combed Swakopmund, and then greater Namibia, and then Jo’burg and greater S. Africa but could not find What to expect anywhere! I bought some other funny books that are not published stateside that scared me away from mince (ground meat), but not that stupid What to expect book! until the very last bookstore I checked in Capetown had it (of course it was the last because I didn’t keep looking, but I was also at the end of my hormonal rope and fresh out of ideas).

Do yourself a favor and don’t buy this book. My real recommendation is that you purchase Your pregnancy Week by Week or just be happy with your doctor’s advice and what the BabyCenter emails tell you.
