As a mother with two children diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, (an autism related disorder) within the past year I have been on a mission to learn more about autism so I can better understand my two special children.
Not very many people, me included, understand what Autism really is. In “The Unspoken truth about Autism: A new look at the Etiology and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders,” Dr. Karen Savlov share a new perspective on the causes of Autism Spectrum disorders.
Savlov believes that the cause of autism stems from an incomplete attachment, a process that extends over the first two to three years of life. She states,
“An attachment to one’s caregiver is necessary for the psychological development of the child. It is during the attachment period that the infant gains an understanding of himself, feels recognized, learns to talk and to use himself with others.”
Savlov backs up her theory with stories from Autistic individuals. many of them are high-functioning or have Asperger’s Syndrome like my two children.
I found “The Unspoken truth about Autism: A new look at the Etiology and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders,” very interesting and helpful for me. The new theory presented in the book sheds light on why my special children behave the way they do. My daughter, with Asperger’s was raised by her grandparents for the first three years of her life. Maybe, due to the fact that I was not present that much for her during those early years it may have led to her forming an incomplete attachment. This is a possibility.

I am unsure if my son also formed an incomplete attachment, although I want to believe that he did. If you have been touched with autism either as a parent, caregiver or teacher of children with Autistic related disorders you must read “The Unspoken truth about Autism: A new look at the Etiology and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.”
Dr. Karent Savlov is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a doctorate in psychoanalysis and practices in Los Angeles. She specializes in autism spectrum disorder, depression and anxiety among other topics, and she is affiliated with the Institute of contemporary Psychoanalysis. Savlov has worked for many years with children, adolescents and adults, providing individual treatment, trainings and support groups for those affected by autism as well as groups for college-age students with developmental disabilities. She has also worked at the university of California, Los Angeles as the manager of organizational development.
